Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Replace the old switch with a new pull chain switch then place the end cap back onto the light fixture. Carefully reattach the wires from the switch to the light remembering to pair black to black and ground to ground. Internal on off switch for a ceiling fan light.

The repair consists of disassembling the fan housing locating the pull chain switch and then replacing it with a new unit. You can buy a 4 pull chain in the lighting section of any hardware store. Repairing a broken fan pull chain switch is a reasonably simple process that can save you a lot of money if you choose to do it yourself rather than hire a a professional. Unscrew the screws where the light fixture attaches to the fan assembly.

There s one nut holding the pull chain to the light kit housing. Before starting flip the circuit breaker or pull the fuse to disconnect the power to the light then test to make sure the power is off photo 1. Remove the old switch. If the pull chain is jammed or stuck and it will not move either way then get some non conductive lubricant spray such as the crc brand and spray a small amount into the opening where the pull chain leads into the switch because sometimes the switch mechanism binds up so the non conductive spray lubricant may do the trick.

Disassemble the switch and reconnect the chain. Pull chain fixtures are made from either plastic or porcelain but we recommend the porcelain because it withstands heat better and lasts longer. Make sure you turn the power source off before taking apart the ceiling fan to be safe. The small switch where the pull chain attaches should now be visible.
